SUBOXONE (SUBS) REHAB

Victory Bay Drug Guide

Suboxone, also known as Subs, is the brand name of a drug that contains both buprenorphine and naloxone. This drug is often used to treat opioid disorders and because of this, it is often abused for the purpose of postponing withdrawal symptoms rather than obtaining a “high.”

Every year, millions of prescriptions are written for Suboxone for substance abuse. However, in 2011, more than 20,000 emergency department visits were for the non-medical use of Suboxone (an increase of nearly fivefold from 2005). At Victory Bay, our Suboxone treatment centers can help those in need of rehab.

Suboxone Abuse

SYMPTOMS

Because Suboxone acts on the same brain receptors as opioids, it can still produce a euphoric effect and be enough for some to desire on a regular basis. The symptoms of a Suboxone “high” can lead to a Suboxone addiction and can include:

  • A mild euphoric feeling
  • Increased confidence
  • An overall calmness
  • Pain relief
  • Lowered stress

Dangers & Effects

The effects of Suboxone (Subs) occur quickly and last much longer than many other opioids, making the drug appealing to some. However, once an individual begins using Suboxone, it can be difficult to stop and can lead to a need for Suboxone addiction treatment. It comes with several short-term and long-term effects that include:

Short-term effects include:

  • Slowed or shallow breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Low blood pressure
  • Headache
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Coordination issues

Long-term effects include:

  • Gastrointestinal issues
  • Drowsiness
  • Disorientation and confusion
  • Mental health issues like anxiety or depression
  • Difficulty in social situations
  • A decrease in pain tolerance

Withdrawal

The longer you use Suboxone, the more likely it is that your body will develop a tolerance to it and a dependence on it. Once you stop using the drug (and without proper rehab for Suboxone), you’ll develop withdrawal symptoms around 48 hours after your last dose. These symptoms can last up to a week and include:

  • Muscle aches
  • Indigestion
  • Insomnia or drowsiness
  • Sweating
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Irritability
